Get to Know The Hundred Before It Hits the Pitch

Updated: Aug 13

If you’ve been hearing the buzz around The Hundred and wondering what it actually is, you’re not alone.

The Hundred is cricket’s shortest, punchiest format, designed to keep you on your feet and hook new fans while showcasing the best talent.

The Hundred was launched in 2021, taking all the excitement from the T20 and turns it up a notch. Each team faces 100 balls with no overs! Just high intensity cricket that is over in around two and a half hours, making it quick and easy weekend/evening television. The loudness, it being co-ed is one of the most fun ways to experience live sport in the UK.

Rules:

  • Each team bats for 100 balls

  • Fielding side change ends after 10 balls

  • Bowlers deliver either five or 10 consecutive balls. The captain decides.

  • Each bowler is limited to 20 deliveries per game

  • A 25-ball power play is given to each team

  • 25-ball power play at the top of each inning (where two fielders can stand outside the fielding circle)

  • Each team gets a timeout to talk tactics mid-innings (the coach can be on the pitch)

  • Whoever scores the most runs wins!

The Hundred isn’t just about simplifying cricket but also levels up the playing field. Both the men and women’s games are played on the same day, at the same venue, for the same fans, which means the women’s game receives the spotlight it deserves. One ticket, two matches. You love to see it.

Within The Hundred, WH Cricket’s Lauren Winfield-Hill is back in action this year for the Oval Invincibles! A seasoned England International, a dynamic batter and wicket keeper, and a calm presence in high-pressure games. In previous seasons, she’s notched up key runs, big knocks, and some of the cleanest glove-work in the league. This year, she returns alongside stars like Meg Lanning and Alice Capsey, and together, they’re looking to reclaim the title. Winfield-Hill’s insight and game management make her one of the most valuable players in the women’s competition.

The Hundred 2025 kicks off today, and it’s running all August long across iconic grounds like The Oval, Lord’s, and Old Trafford. And while the league’s homegrown energy is unmatched, there’s another major event coming soon: the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2026, with the ticket ballot now open. The final is at Lord’s and the crowds are looking to be busy! And if last year’s men’s T20 ballot is anything to go by, those tickets are going to fly.

Cricket is evolving, and this summer is your perfect entry point. Shorter games, bolder play, and full-throttle competition: The Hundred.
